Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Mrs Elizabeth Ativie, has stepped down from office and the House now has a new Speaker.
Ativie was said to have left the position so as to allow fairness in the sharing of political offices in the state.
She has now been replaced by the Deputy Speaker, Justin Okonoboh, who has been sworn in already.
Moving a motion on Monday under matters of urgent public importance, Majority Leader of the House, Folly Ogedengbe, said there was need to be fair to the other senatorial district left out in the present political sharing formula in the state.
The incumbent governor of the state, Adams Oshiomhole, hails from Edo North senatorial district while his deputy, Pius Odubu, and Ativie are from Edo South, leaving Edo Central senatorial district out of the equation.
But with this new arrangement, Okonoboh, who represents Igueben constituency, has balanced the system.
Recall that Ativie was sworn in on May 3, 2016, after her predecessor, Victor Edoror, was impeached.
Monday’s motion was supported by 18 out of the 24 members of the House.
