The once peaceful atmosphere enjoyed at the Lagos State chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, seems to have been corrupted as the association is battling with a crisis that might tear it apart without sympathy.
At the recently concluded annual state chapter election conducted by the doctors’ body in Nigeria, two factions emerged and none of the group is ready to back out.
After the poll, a former President of the Lagos Medical Guild, Dr Olumuyiwa Odusote, became the Lagos NMA chairman-elect.
However, Dr Olubunmi Owojowolo also emerged winner of another poll that took place at another centre in the state.
While the election that produced Dr Odusote took place at the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research, Yaba, Dr Owojowolo was declared winner at the election held at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba.
According to both parties, they followed the NMA national constitution by announcing the planned venue of the election.
It is not clear which of the two factions will be recognised by the national leadership of the association.
However, we learnt that the national body had intervened in the crisis rocking the chapter before this election.
