Lagos Command of the Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the authenticity of the claim by family of cancer patient, Mayowa Ahmed, that they needed money to fly her abroad for treatment.
The issue brought about controversies few weeks ago after a blogger, Linda Ikeji, claimed the Save Mayowa Campaign was purely a scam.
Mayowa is said to be suffering to a stage-4 cancer.
Before the alleged fraud claim, Yoruba actress, Toyin Aimakhu, had solicited for funds on behalf of the patient.
A sum of N35 million was said to have been needed, but about three days after, over N80 million was reportedly realised.
But Toyin became suspicious after she was prevented from seeing the patient at the hospital. The police later got involved in the matter and froze the accounts to conduct an investigation into it.
However, after their investigation, the Lagos police have ascertained that there was no fraud involved.
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, who confirmed this, said the command therefore had to remove the embargo placed on the accounts, where the sum of N81million and 100,000 dollars, were raised by public spirited Nigerians, home and abroad.
He said according to their findings, the controversy was caused by misunderstandings over the modalities for dispensing and controlling the money between the Ahmed family, the Nollywood actress, Toyin Aihmaku and Life Stake Foundation.
