“Streaming of songs on Playfre is not only limited to registered users at the moment. We are looking to restrict music streaming to only registered users in a bid to increase to number of registered users on Playfre in the near future” says Chika Nwaogu, CEO of Playfre Africa.
With a catalogue of over 50 million songs and 2 million artists, Playfre is currently the largest African music streaming service in terms of catalogue size. Playfre has grown steadily in the past few months since launch; averaging around 250 streams per registered users.
Playfre is the first African music streaming service to join the International Digital Media and Arts Association (iDMAa); an association dedicated to serving educators, practitioners, scholars, and organizations with interests in digital media.
“We have been speaking with prospective investors lately and Playfre will soon go beyond being bootstrapped to become venture-backed” says Chika Nwaogu
“Playfre wants to be more than just a music streaming service but also a platform that helps African artists monetize their creatives easily and free too. We have distributed over 100 contents since the launch of SongRoute by Playfre. We hope someday to also help African acts get their content on both local music streaming services in Africa and the rest of the world” says Tosin Emmanuel, the newly appointed COO of Playfre’s SongRoute.
With operations in both Kenya and Nigeria, Playfre is an African music streaming platform that was launched on 1 May 2019. The platform offers users across Africa access to over 50 million songs for free. To date, Playfre has amassed over 5,000 registered users and over 1,000,000 streams.
