Tyler Perry, who was once homeless, is officially Hollywood’s latest billionaire, according to Forbes’, the magazine known for keeping track of celebrities’ net worth.
The media publication announced on Tuesday that the long-time filmmaker Tyler Perry is officially a billionaire, joining the elite club which boasts of Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg and George Lucas.
He has earned $1.4 billion in pre-tax income since 2005, the money outlet reports. They estimated his net worth as $1 billion, “with a clear path to future membership in The Forbes 400.”
A breakdown of how Forbes has calculated Tyler’s milestone net worth includes:
- $320 million for his entire library of movies, TV shows, plays, etc., as he owns 100% of the content he’s created
- $300 million in cash and investments
- $280 million for Tyler Perry Studios, which sits on 330 acres in Georgia
- $60 million for his equity stake in BET+, the streaming service that debuted last year.
- $40 million in homes and toys; amounting to a cool $1 billion for someone who once slept in his car.
Perry grew up making his mother laugh with impersonations. He was dealing with more than poverty because of an upbringing by an abusive man who he later learned was not his father. He was inspired to write out the stress he was feeling after watching an episode of Oprah Winfrey’s talk show.
Tyler, an American actor, writer, producer, and director has produced several movies including ‘Diary of a Mad Black Woman,’ ‘Daddy’s Little Girls,’ ‘Why Did I Get Married,’ and the controversial blockbuster ‘Acrimony,’ to mention a few.
