Following the recommendation by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Usman Alkali Baba, the Police Service Commission (PSC) has approved the suspension of DCP Abba Kyari, from the Nigeria Police Force, over his indictment by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
The police agency said Kyari’s suspension took effect on Saturday, July 31, 2021 and the IGP has also been directed to furnish the PSC with information on further development on the matter for necessary further action.
Abba Kyari, Head of the Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT) had been indicted by Abass Ramon, aka Hushpuppi in a $1.1 million international fraud conspiracy.
The IGP had in a letter on Saturday recommended the immediate suspension of Kyari, in order to create an enabling environment for the NPF special investigation panel to carry out its investigations into the weighty allegations against Kyari without interference.
He noted that the suspension is without prejudice to the constitutional presumption of innocence in favour of the officer.
The probe into the allegation against DCP Abba Kyari handled by a Special Investigation Panel (SIP) will comprise four senior police officers and would be headed by Joseph Egbunike, the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigations Department (FCID).
The SIP, inter alia, is to undertake a detailed review of all the allegations against DCP Abba Kyari by the US Government as contained in relevant documents that have been availed the NPF by the FBI.
The SIP is also to obtain detailed representation of DCP Abba Kyari to all the allegations levelled against him, conduct further investigations as it deems fit, and submit recommendations to guide further actions by the Force Leadership on the matter.
