Skye Bank Dares FG, Fires 200 Staff

Last week, the Federal Government directed banks and other financial institutions in Nigeria to suspend the downsizing of their workforce.

This decision, as explained by the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chris Ngige, was taken due to series of petitions before the government on the issue.

He ordered that the retrenchment exercise by the banks and financial institutions be put on hold for now pending when the issues are resolved.

But Skye Bank, has gone against this directive and has laid off some of its employees.

The bank, on Monday, June 6, 2016, sacked about 200 of its staff.

According to the management of Skye Bank, the sacking of 200 of its workers was because the affected staff failed in their 2015 appraisal.

It was gathered by Aproko247 that the affected employees got to work as usual on Monday, only to be handed their termination of appointment letters.

They were apparently shocked that their services would no longer be needed by the bank.

It is not clear if the FG would sanction Skye Bank for disobeying its order. Many are keeping their fingers crossed watching the step the government would take on this.
