After being discharged from hospital yesterday, Argentina legend, Diego Maradona was taken to a recovery clinic where he will be treated for alcohol dependency.
The former Napoli and Boca Juniors player had emergency surgery eight days ago for a subdural haematoma, a blood clot on the brain.
The legend was admitted to a La Plata clinic days after his 60th birthday due to his worrying physical condition, with medic Leopoldo Luque initially stating that he was suffering from anaemia, dehydration and that he was in low spirits.
Tests carried out at the facility then revealed that Maradona had sustained a subdural haematoma, which required immediate surgery at a hospital in Olivos, to the north of Buenos Aires.
Maradona was kept in for longer than expected due to withdrawal symptoms caused by his sudden abstention from alcohol.
His physician told reporters the 60-year-old coach of Gimnasia y Esgrima finally left hospital on Wednesday evening in an ambulance accompanied by family members.
He was headed to a rehabilitation facility in the north of Buenos Aires and will spend time there recovering from his alcohol problems.
“Diego is whole and wants to undergo rehabilitation and he is scheduled to leave hospital today (Wednesday).
“The good thing is that Diego is together, Diego is solid.
“Diego has gone through maybe the most difficult moment of his life and I think it was a miracle that they found this bleeding in his brain that could have cost him his life,” his lawyer, Matias Morla told reporters.
