Gunmen suspected to be members of the Islamic sect called Boko Haram, over the weekend, abducted not less than 20 women near Chibok, Borno State.
On April 15, 2014, the group kidnapped over 250 students of the Government Girls Secondary School, GGSS in Chibok and have not yet released over 200 of the girls. The schoolgirls are believed to be camped in Sambisa Forest in Borno.
The Guardian of London and Bloomberg report that the women were taken away after the terrorists attacked a nomadic settlement known as Garkin Fulani.
One Alhaji Tar, a member of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria, was quoted as saying, “we got information that they went there and took away the women at the time none of the males were there.
“The three young men they met there could not help the women, as they (gunmen) also ordered the three of them to enter the Toyota Hilux vans and took all of them away.”
But Chairman of Chibok local government area, Baana Lawan, said, “when I saw the report online, I despatched some vigilance group members and hunters to the scene. They came back and told me that the place was never attacked and that no one was abducted.”
Also speaking in the same vein, Borno State Police Commissioner, Lawan Tanko, dismissed the report, claiming such never happened.
“I believe there is no truth in the attack as I just spoke to my divisional police officer in Chibok. He should have informed me of the abduction if there was any,” Tanko said.
