Despite an attack from President Trump’s supporters, who stormed the Capitol to disrupt the proceedings on Wednesday, the US Congress have finally confirmed Mr. Biden’s Electoral College victory and certified him as the next President of the United State.
The lawmakers were able to resume the session after police managed to remove the mob, which had been encouraged by President Trump in a bid to overturn his defeat.
Joe Biden’s victory was confirmed in the early hours of Thursday by a joint session presided over by Vice-President Mike Pence.
The Senate and House rejected objections to throw out Georgia and Pennsylvania’s electoral votes for Biden. Republicans also objected to Arizona, Nevada and Michigan’s electoral votes, but the motions failed before they reached debate.
“The announcement of the state of the vote by the President of the Senate shall be deemed a sufficient declaration of the persons elected President and Vice President of the United States, each for the term beginning on the 20th day of January 2021 and shall be entered together with the list of the votes on the journals of the Senate and the House of Representatives,” Pence said following the count of all of the state’s Electoral College votes.
President Trump in a statement following the formal declaration of Joe Biden’s victory by the Congress said the decision “represents the end of the greatest first term in presidential history.”
“Even though I totally disagree with the outcome of the election, and the facts bear me out, nevertheless there will be an orderly transition on January 20th.
“I have always said we would continue our fight to ensure that only legal votes were counted. While this represents the end of the greatest first term in presidential history, it’s only the beginning of our fight to Make America Great Again,” Trump said
In the event of yesterday’s attack, the U.S. Capitol police shot and killed one protester as she tried to enter the building and three other people died from “separate medical emergencies” during the siege on the halls of Congress, according to Washington D.C.’s Metropolitan Police Department.
He said they were confronted by plainclothes officers, and an officer pulled out a weapon and fired it. The woman was taken to hospital and proclaimed dead. She has not been officially named, but local media identified her as a San Diego-area US Air Force veteran and Trump supporter Ashli Babbit.
Officials said the three other deaths included one woman and two men, but details of how they died have not been made public. At least 14 members of the police were injured during the unrest.
