As the country battles with a daily increase in the number of infections for COVID-19 amidst a second wave, the total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Nigeria has surpassed 100,000 on Sunday January, 10th 2021.
In its latest update, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) reported 1,024 new cases thereby bringing the total number of infections to 100,087.
The NCDC sadly reported eight additional COVID-19-related deaths in the last 24 hours in the country.
The agency said the total number of deaths now stands at 1,358 and the case fatality rate is 1.5 per cent in the country.
According to NCDC, the 1,024 new cases were reported in 16 states and the FCT with Lagos state recording the highest number of cases (653).
Amongst other states with COVID-19 new cases includes Plateau (63); Benue (48); Zamfara (45); FCT (42); Rivers (27); Ondo and Adamawa (26 each); Kaduna (22); Ogun (16); Imo (12); Kano (9), Edo (8); Yobe (6); Ekiti (5); Jigawa (4); and Osun (2).
Since the outbreak of the virus in Nigeria 11 month ago, the country has been able to test 1,025,560 people of its over 200 million population with 13,976 tests carried out in the past 24 hours.
The agency noted that though the COVID-19 pandemic is not over, the availability of vaccines will bring the country closer to controlling the acute phase of this pandemic as it awaits the arrival of the vaccines.
It added that the country’s National Primary Healthcare Development Agency is working to ensure easy and fair distribution of COVID-19 vaccines in Nigeria.
The federal government had revealed last week that the country will receive at least 100,000 doses of the Pfizer and BioNTech approved COVID-19 vaccines by the end of January as it plans to vaccinate 40% of the country’s population by the end of this year.
At the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 briefing, Faisal Shuaib, Executive director of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, revealed that President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo would be the first recipients of the Pfizer coronavirus vaccine.
He also said the vaccines would be distributed to health workers and key political leaders in order to raise awareness before giving it to the citizens.
