It is an open secret that many Nigerians were not happy with the performance of Nigerian midfielder, John Mikel Obi, at the just concluded FIFA World Cup in Brazil. But Aproko247 can authoritatively tell you why the footballer played the way he did at the mundial.
Mikel, defending his performance, claimed he only played for the team and not to seek any personal glory.
In an exclusive chat with Kick Off Nigeria, the Chelsea player disclosed that he is being unfairly criticised by Nigerians.
He admitted that he did not perform as he did at the Confederation Cup held in Brazil in 2013. “The Confederation Cup was a learning experience for us, and I think I was a little more forward there, but now I had to do more work for the team,” he noted.
He explained that, “I tried to do my best to work hard for the team. We play together and nobody wants to be a Maradona because in our team, everybody has to play for each other.
“All I wanted to do was work hard for the team and not to look for glory, but people don’t see that.”
Mikel further said, “You don’t always have to dribble everybody to help the team. And the coach knows that I was doing my best.”
