Buhari, Osinbajo Secretly Declare Assets

Nigeria’s President, Muhammadu Buhari, and his Vice, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, have declared their assets, however, not publicly as many Nigerians had expected them to do.

Buhari had promised Nigerians during his campaign that if he is eventually elected President of Nigeria, he would publicly declare his assets.

Garba Shehu, Head, President Muhammadu Buhari Media Team, disclosed in a statement that on Friday, the Code of Conduct Bureau acknowledged the submission of Buhari’s and Osinbajo’s assets declaration.

He explained that the forms were submitted separately on Thursday, May 28, 2015 and signed by Sam Saba, the agency’s Chairman. According to Shehu, Buhari’s Declarant ID was given as ‘President: 000001/2015’.

Shehu noted that, “By declaring their assets, President Buhari and Vice President Osinbajo may have not only fulfilled the requirements of the Nigerian Constitution, but also fulfilled the first of their many campaign promises.”

The 1999 Constitution stipulates in Chapter VI, Section 140 that, “that a person elected to the office of President shall not begin to perform the functions of that office until he has declared his assets and liabilities as prescribed in the Constitution.”
