Tragedy was let loose on Thursday in Owena, a border town between Osun and Ondo States when an articulated vehicle rammed into a roadside market along the Ilesha-Akure Expressway in the town, leaving not less than 10 persons dead.
It was reported that the trailer had a brake failure and in an attempt to stop the heady duty vehicle, the driver lost control and crashed it into the market, crushing most of the victims to death and injuring several others.
Among the dead victims was also the Osun State coordinator of Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, Special Marshal programme, Chief S. O. Adewale.
To avoid being lynched by angry youths in the community, the driver of the trailer and his assistance bolted away. However, an attempt by the youths to set the truck on fire was stopped by elders in the area.
It was said that the vehicle was heading for Akure in Ondo State from Ilesha in Osun State when the incident occurred. Victims were later taken to the General Hospital in Ilesha, Osun State.
