President Muhammadu Buhari has announced the appointment of a new chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
The new INEC boss, according to the Presidency, is Professor Mahmud Yakubu. His appointment was announced on Wednesday in Abuja.
Yakubu is a professor of Political History and International Studies and was the Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund.
He is an expert in guerrilla warfare, terrorism and counter-terrorism and was also among delegates to the National Conference put together by former president Goodluck Jonathan in 2014.
In a related development, the President also announced the appointment of five new National Commissioners of INEC.
They are Mrs Amina Zakari (North-West); Dr Anthonia Okoosi-Simbine (North Central); Baba Shettima Arfo (North-East); Dr Mohammed Mustafa Lecky (South-South) and Soyebi Adedeji Solomon (South-West).
The South-East is said to still have a sitting National Commissioner.
